E-Bike Regulations: Will Helmets Soon Be Mandatory in the Netherlands?

January 5, 2025

E-bikes have become a staple in the Dutch cycling landscape, offering speed and convenience. However, their higher speeds also come with increased risks. Studies show that e-bike riders are more frequently involved in serious accidents compared to traditional cyclists, and the number of fatal e-bike accidents continues to rise annually.

Helmet Laws Across Europe

To address this growing safety concern, the Dutch government is considering introducing a helmet mandate for e-bike users. This aligns with policies in other European countries:

  • In Switzerland, helmets are mandatory for cyclists traveling over 20 km/h.
  • In France, helmets are required for children under 12, even when riding e-bikes.
  • In Germany, there’s no general helmet mandate for e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h, but wearing one is strongly recommended.

Helmet Mandate vs. Awareness Campaigns

The Dutch government aims to reduce the number of severe head injuries by promoting helmet use. Minister Barry Madlener has proposed initiatives to encourage voluntary helmet adoption, targeting a 20% adoption rate within the next decade.

While regulations can play a key role, safety ultimately starts with individual choices. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of severe injury by 60% and fatal injury by 71%. Don’t wait for laws to change—take charge of your safety today and wear a helmet.
